Texas homes almost always all have water heaters that are right behind your HVAC system as an energy-user. We use them for almost everything we are doing in the house so it makes sense that this expense would be great, and it would be a priority to keep them well maintained and running.

How to keep your energy bill low

At 18% of the home’s annual energy usage, we should pay more attention to how this thing is running and how to keep that number down.

Tip #1: Set the unit’s temperature to 120ºF instead of the standard 140º that it is set at in default mode from installation.  This will also slow down the sediment buildup to help it last longer.

Tip #2: Insulate your water heater and the first 6 feet of it’s pipes with a water heater blanket that you can get at any Lowe’s or Home Depot. In fact.. here:

Tip #3: Flush the tank once a year. Turn it off, connect a hose to the drain valve, and open the valve to empty the tank. Once it is done emptying, flush it out with cold water, close the drain valve and refill the tank.
