Texas Best Camping Spots

Camping in Texas (and enjoying it) all depends on the weather, what you bring with you, and most importantly- who is in your tent. We know that summer is coming and it is going to be a hot one- so before we get above 100 degrees, here is a guide to camping in Texas. From the eastern woodlands of Texas, to the wide-open West, the great state of Texas provides ample opportunity to enjoy a good weekend with the stars. There are so many places to explore as a family, with friends, or in solitude. Here are 5 that we suggest you look into to get you inspired to enjoy the great outdoors.

1- Big Bend Ranch State Park

The Big Bend region and National Park holds this primitive camp secret. As long as you are 3/4 mile from trailheads or roads, 1/4 mile from other campers, and 300  feet from water and prehistoric sites, you are allowed to go pretty much wherever you wanted in the state park. Get ready for some of the best clear night skies.

2- South Padre Island National Seashore

Get out the towels, beach balls, and sunscreen; Texas has some of the best beach camping there is. We recommend Yarborough Pass- which is just 15.5 miles south of the visitor center, on a stretch of beach only accessible by 4-wheel drive or boat. Saltwater fishing is a must here.

3- Caprock Canyons Trailway

This 60+ trailway crosses through some of the most spectacular terrain in the Panhandle, from the Caprock Escarpment to the Red River Valley. The trail follows an old railroad route, crossing 46 bridges, three counties, and the Clarity Tunnel- one of the last active railroad tunnels in Texas.

4- The Outer Mountain Loop at Big Bend National Park

This backpacking trek leads hikers out of the Chisos Basin and into Big Bend’s rugged desert terrain, passing some of the most spectacular views in the park. It does take 3 days to complete the loop, so pack lots of water and they even recommend that only experienced hikers attempt this route.

5- Gorman Falls at Colorado Bend State Park

This is a perfect spot for a quick weekend camping trip, as it features both drive-up and hike-in campsites. Colorado Bend is a versatile site with plenty of fun from hiking and biking, to swimming and starting at the waterfalls. You are also very close to Bend General Store which has a restaurant and live music many nights.
